Kolkata Suspected Maoists gunned down a CPM leader at Barikul in Bankura on early Thursday morning. According to the police. Haren Baskey (34), a CPM zonal committee member, was shot dead by Maoists in Suritari forest in the Barikul police station area.

A team of 20-25 armed Maoists cadres stormed the house of Haren Baskey and dragged him out around 11 pm, said a senior officer of Barikul police station.

Dhiren Baskey, brother of Haren Baskey, said: “A person of this locality asked my brother to come out. The moment he stepped out of the house, five armed Maoist cadres surrounded him and lifted him. I and my sister-in-law Shyamali tried to resist them but they started beating us. We were threatened that we would be shot if we tried to follow them.” Haren’s body was spotted inside the forest around 2 km from his home.

“There were several injury marks on his body. He was mercilessly beaten up before being gunned down. His face was also completely smashed. We have sent the body to Bankura Medical College Hospital for a postmortem,” said a police officer.

Amiyo Patro, CPM district committee secretary, meanwhile, said since night patrolling was not being conducted, the Maoists have taken advantage of the situation. “The Belpahari squad of the Maoists has sneaked into the area and is continuing with the killings,” Patro added.
