Pune A group of around 25 Shiv Sena activists from Parvati area attacked couples at Peshwe Park for celebrating Valentine’s Day on Saturday afternoon. The Sena members thrashed a boy who questioned them. One of the Shiv Sainiks also tried to assault a girl for raising an argument and protesting their hooliganism in the park.

“I am also a Maharashtrian like you... then why are you troubling me,” the girl asked the Sena members. Hurling abuses on the girl, a Sainik tried to hit her with a stick. “Tu mulgi ahes mhanun tula sodat ahey... (I am leaving you just because you are a girl),” the Shiv Sainik told the girl. Soon several other couples fled the park out of fear of getting beaten up by the charging Sena members.

The incident took place around 2.30 pm and its live coverage was also shown on some of the news channels. Sena members Bala Bhamre of Parvati area, who led the attack at Peshwe Park said, “Our party is against the Valentine’s Day celebrations, which is spoiling our culture. We had first requested the couples to stop celebrating the day and leave the park. But a boy started arguing with us. So we taught him a lesson in our style.”

He said, “The girl had thrown our saffron flag on the ground which angered our members...because she was a girl, we let her free without causing any hurt.”

The girl later told The Indian Express that she hails from a Maharashtrian family and strongly condemns the hooliganism of Shiv Sainiks. Meanwhile, the Duttawadi police arrested a Shiv Sainik identified as Suresh Nathuram Lokhande, a resident of Janta Vasahat, for causing nuisance in the Peshwe Park. Police inspector Uttam More said, “Search is on for Lokhande’s accomplices. All would be arrested for rioting and illegal gathering at the Peshwe Park.”

I agree 100% with Mr Sharma by Aniket on 25 Sep 2009

Absolutely Sir! Well said.....This is what the modern economy is all about, modern festivities like Valentines day are commercial ventures of the capital market. 99% of the people who participate in it don't even know the significance of it! Indian culture that evolved 5000 years before St Valentine crap is taking a beating because of this. The so called Free market thrives on exploiting a man's weakness. What the Shiv Sainiks did is definitely condemnable, however, PUNE, the Maratha Capital...the epicenter of Maharashtrian and Hindu culture has been infected by this kind of western plague. It's deplorable too....Economic liberalization is not a bad idea but we should know where and how to keep the upper limit. Otherwise we will give a chance for the greedy politicians to exploit us even further! And we'll keep losing our identity nevertheless!

Courageous girl! by Janvi on 15 Feb 2009

well done girl!stand up for your rights and fight against any injustice against you or to others in the same way. You belong to a country where we had brave women like Rani of Jhansi. You dont get cowed down by these uneducated and uncivilsed goodas.See that you are safe all the time and collect a group of like minded people . I pity the cowards who ran off from the scene instead of fighting back.

IRREVERSIBLE DECADENCE, PAYING FOR OUR MISDEEDS by Krishen Sharma on 15 Feb 2009

It seems too late in the day for any organized resistance to social decadence in various forms in India. We allowed the scum of society to represent us for making laws, allowed ever so many social activists to fight for animal rights for humans (such as coitus at will in the name of democratic freedom). Since about early 1990s, the normalization measures for economy began to be misused in a big way by antisocials to propagate immorality through their wares, hotels which were vice houses, cinema and TV serials providing absolute titllating trash under the 'B'ollywood and 'K'ollywood banners to take our young down the immorality path in various ways. If this is modern democracy and freedom, we cannot survive as an orderly nation now that we have a corrupt multiparty system of opportunist, selfish politicians who have no use for any long term vision of national srength and unity which is possible only on sterling moral foundations. India was was to show the right way to world - no longer
