Ranjana Sarode had approached the Kurla police on September 16 and filed an application describing the ‘physical and mental torture’ by her husband and his family.

Police Inspector (Crime) B Jadhav from Kurla police station said, “She insisted that we book the husband, Raju Ganpat Sarode, his mother, his grandmother, two brothers, two sisters, two maternal uncles and two paternal aunts for harassment and criminal intimidation.”

He added, “For two months we tried to amicably resolve the issue between the families by holding meetings with them. However, neither Sarode nor her husband’s family were willing to change their stands so we registered the case of harassment on Monday.”

According to Sarode’s statement, she married Raju in 2000 and the couple enjoyed a hassle-free life till 2004. Her husband, who runs a shoe shop, then began demanding money from her parents to build a new house. The other members also tortured her physically and mentally, the complaint said.

“After Sarode’s husband and others started harassing her, she shifted with her parents and has been staying with them for the past two years. She claims that she had brought Rs 50,000 in cash, electronic appliances and other valuables with her after their marriage,” said Jhadav,

Adding, “However, Raju’s family wanted funds to buy a new house and began demanding money from her. They also reportedly cast aspersions on her character after which she along with her daughter left her husband’s house,” said Jadhav.
