“Marks of the mid-term assessment will not be added to the final year or terminal examination though the colleges can take up mid-term examinations, if they desire,” said Ashok Ranjan Thakur, vice-chancellor of the university.
The university took the decision after it received 2,700 review applications indicating growing discontent among students after the results were declared. The students alleged that the marks awarded are not reflective of their performance in the examination.
Explaining the reasons for adding mid-term examination marks to the final examination, the vice-chancellor said: “We want students to give more importance to their classes and improve their attendance.”
Despite procedural hiccups and lack of proper infrastructure, university officials say that the mid-term examination was started with a particular purpose, which still holds water.
Formed in 2007 by splitting all colleges affiliated to the Calcutta University in North 24-Praganas, the university recorded 40,000 students writing the first year examinations this year.
Students, meanwhile, claim the 45-college strong University does not have the necessary infrastructure for such experimentation.
