Gandhinagar, December 31 In its first executive decision after coming to power, the government of Chief Minister Narendra Modi made it mandatory for all newlyweds to register their marriage with effect from January 1.

The registration would have to be done within 30 days of the marriage.

The decision has been taken under the Marriage Registration Act, 2006, following Supreme Court guidelines that made it incumbent on all states to implement mandatory registration of all marriages in their jurisdiction before January 25, 2008.

Under existing system, marriages are registered by sub-registrars working under the control of Superintendents of Stamps. The new order fixes officials with respective jurisdictions for the registration. In villages registration will be done by talatis, in municipalities by chief officers, and in case of corporation areas by the designated health officers.

The newlyweds would need to shell out a Rs 200 court fee and even the witnesses and advocates would need to present identity and age proof before authorities. Overall superintendence of the registration would be done under Registrar (Marriages) under the Health Commissioner in Gandhinagar.
