Lucknow Chief Minister Mayawati has written a letter to the Prime Minister requesting him to increase Uttar Pradesh’s share in the power generated by the central power plants.

There are power plants owned by the Centre and the power that is generated by these plants is distributed among the northern states.

Mayawati has urged the Prime Minister to fix the quota of power for such states on the basis of the state’s population. She pleaded that the state receives a very small quantity of power generated by the central power plants.

According to the letter, the power generated by the Centre-owned plants are distributed among the 9 northern states.

The state’s population is about 16.6 crore as per the 2001 census figure and this constitutes around 54 per cent of the total population of the 9 northern states that share the power of the central pool.

She said the state is facing a serious power crisis and the Centre must fix UP’s share in the central pool on the basis of its population.

The state’s demand for power supply is about 9,700 mega watt while the power available is around 6,000 mega watt. Thus, the state is forced to purchase power at a higher rate of 8 paise per unit from the same central pool.
