Lucknow, February 7 Chief Minister Mayawati has condemned the remarks made by Lieutenant-Governor of Delhi Tejendra Khanna against the north Indians in which the latter had termed them as habitual breakers of traffic rules.

Demanding the removal of the Lt-Governor, she said that Khanna’s remarks have hurt the sentiments of crores of north Indians and termed it as ‘humiliating’. She also sent a letter to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, in which she wrote that since the comment about north Indians taking pride in violating the law has come from Lt-Governor of a state it could further augment problems for the north Indian people living in states like Maharashtra.

She once again called for the Prime Minister’s intervention in ensuring safety and security of people from the north Indian living in Maharashtra.

Khanna had made the comment at a Delhi Traffic Police function in New Delhi on Thursday. He said: “North Indians are responsible for breaking traffic rules. They disregard laws and rules and reduce laws to shreds, whereas the people of south India respect the law.” The L-G, however, retracted soon and clarified: “The level of self- compliance of traffic regulations, such as maintaining lane discipline and respecting traffic lights, is lower in Delhi as compared to in the South.”
