It has now been decided that Mayor Kamlesh will be able to hold a review meeting once a month. She will also review the progress of projects that have been undertaken by the civic body. Further, she can call officials to her office for meetings as has been the practice in the past. The mayor can also hold meeting with Commissioner Dr Roshan Sunkaria if something needs to be discussed.

While mayors had been reviewing development of projects in the past, Sunkaria had recently objected to Kamlesh’s calling a meeting, saying she was not authorised to do so. The spat came out in the open during a House meet on June 30.

The mayor produced Sunkaria’s letters that said, citing provisions of the Municipal Act, the commissioner is the head of the department of all departments in the MC and that only he can call meetings of officials to discuss the functions performed by them. The letters were sent when the mayor had asked for a meeting to discuss the progress of community centres.

After councillors complained to the home secretary about the issue, the latter called a meeting of the two on Friday. Kamlesh went to Ram Niwas’s office with a large number of councillors.

She said: “We are representatives of the people who approach us with various problems. It is essential that we interact with officers and review development works.”
