As per the suggestions, besides increasing the fine to be imposed on contractors for violations of terms and conditions, there is also a proposal to impose fine on commuters for wrong parking of their vehicles.
The Mayor himself will head the sub-committee formed. Other members of the committee include councillors Chandermukhi Sharma, Surinder Kumar Jagota and Pallav Mukherjee. Joint Municipal Commissioner-II, H S Kandhola will be the official member of the sub-committee.
Chawla has proposed charging Rs 300 for the wrong parking of cars in the paid parking lot, while Rs 100 has been proposed for two wheelers. Besides, an extra charge of Rs 100 is in the offing for the towing of the vehicles.
Chawla has also proposed uniform for the paid parking attendants. They are to wear brightly coloured jackets or T-shirts, as the previous arrangement of ties and caps has failed to work so far. This way the commuters would be able to recognise the parking attendants, he said. He has also recommended that JEs and SDOs should be responsible for submitting reports for the proper functioning of paid parking lots in their respective areas.
To ensure the safety of vehicles against theft, the MC is also contemplating the idea of introducing an insurance scheme for vehicles parked in the paid parking space. The premium will be based on the parking capacity of the parking lot.
Taking into account the fact that the token system introduced last year has failed to take off, Chawla has also proposed reducing the amount to be charged in case the contractor loses the brass tokens. At present, Rs 100 is charged from the contractor for the loss of one token; now suggestions have been made to reduce the amount to Rs 20 per token.
To ensure the proper regulation of traffic in the parking lots, suggestions have been made to deploy parking attendants every 50 metres. An increase in the amount of fine to be charged from contractors has also been mooted. While Rs 500 is currently being charged for violations, the amount will be increased to Rs 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000 based on the gravity of violations.
Mayor Pardeep Chhabra said that the sub-committee after studying the suggestions will submit its recommendations within 15 days.
