As already announced by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, these colonies will be getting facilities of water supply and brick pavement. Hence most of the colonies sold by SAD and Congress leaders will now be regularised.

These colonies had been sold off by influential colonisers without providing any basic facility and afterwards the government did not take any action against them.

Finally SAD-BJP government has decided to bear the cost by spending Rs 48.68 crore on these colonies. A total of Rs 32.68 crore will be spent on brick paving in these colonies while water supply lines will cost Rs 16 crores. When asked about the deadline, Mayor Hakam Singh Giaspura and Commissioner G.S Ghuman said, “Three months is the deadline. All 216 works will be allotted to 216 contractors and hence it will not be a problem for a contractor to handle work of one colony each.”

Though the Mayor was mum for most of the time, but to cover up, the commissioner said, “Now, GLADA has been instructed not to allow any more growth of unauthorised colonies in the city. Because it is the duty of the coloniser to provide basic facilities to the residents.”

However no action has been taken on the existing colonisers as of now.

The total length of the streets of these colonies is approximately 295 km and nearly 2 lakh residents will be benifit through this move. Maximum colonies fall in zone B, which are 108 in number while 54 colonies are in zone A, zone C has 34 colonies while only 20 colonies are in zone D.

The residents of these colonies have been suffering from water-borne diseases from time to time because most of them have already taken illegal connections. Hence to reduce their misery, authorities are adding facilities, said Ghuman.
