Chandigarh, January 31 The digging of roads in front of government houses in Sector 22 by the Municipal Corporation took the residents by surprise, apart from inconveniencing them. Many of the residents woke up to find malba dumped in front of their houses due to which they had difficulty moving their vehicles out.

The area where the massive digging work is being conducted is represented by Mayor Pardeep Chhabra in the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh. The digging along V4 roads is being done to lay paver blocks for pedestrian pathways.

Area residents told Newsline that had the MC officials informed them about this work, they could have moved out of their residence. But instead of passing prior information, the MC team dug up the road after midnight and left the place after dumping the malba in front of their houses.

Not happy with this, some of the residents even brought the matter to the notice of Mayor Pardeep Chhabra, who at present is in Mumbai to attend a seminar on Urban Good Governance.

Besides, the heaps of malba lying opposite Sector 22 market has not been cleared for the past many days. Even while laying the paver blocks on the road, MC officials did not bother to lift the malba from the already congested road.

Arvind Jain, president of Market Welfare Association Sector 22, complained that due to the rubble strewn all over the road, traffic congestion has increased and demanded to remove the malba at the earliest.

When contacted, Executive Engineer (Roads), Zorawar Singh said the digging is being done to lay paver blocks for the pedestrian pathways. He said it is not possible for them to complete work in just a day. However, he assured to lift the malba on Friday.

Mayor Pardeep Chhabra said he would instruct the officials to hereby inform residents before digging the road in front of their houses.
