Chandigarh, March 3 To address the parking problem being faced by the commuters in Sector 34 city sub-centre, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has decided to raise the issue in the Coordination Committee Meeting on Tuesday. The MC has decided to suggest a new parking lot and development of a multi-level parking.

The Coordination Committee includes senior officials from the UT Administration and Chandigarh Municipal Corporation besides the Mayor. The MC has given top priority to the development of new parking lots in Sector 34.

For the 200 odd buildings in Sector 34, which includes some private hospitals, government offices and coaching institutes, the existing parking lots are proving insufficient.

According to sources, the agenda of the meeting includes the proposal to convert open spaces lying vacant in front of SCO 121-122-123 to SCO 50-51 Mukut Hospital as parking lots. It has been suggested that the open areas be provided with a road and a parking lot to control chaos and allow free movement of traffic.

“There are six storey buildings with a carpet area of 12,000 square feet to 15,000 square feet and due to the presence of large number of vehicles, parking has become a major concern. Even the traders of Sector 34 market are ready to pay the parking fee,” the proposal states.

The MC has also proposed to develop the incomplete structure lying in the sector in front of SCO 371-372-373 as multi-level parking. Besides, there are other issues, which will also be discussed in the meeting.

UT Administrator Gen S F Rodrigues (retd) had formed the Coordination Committee of senior UT and MC officials, including the Mayor, to ensure better coordination between the administration and corporation.
