Since Sarangpur is going to be a hub of commercial activity in the coming years, it would need proper parking space to accommodate the vehicles, officials said. It was further told that during discussions held with the UT Chief Architect over the issue of tourist bus parking, the idea to construct basement parking for cars was proposed.
However, the office of UT Chief Architect has so far not been able to carry the demarcation of land site. A senior MC official informed that the land allocated for the project adjoins Punjab and requires demarcation of exact dimension.
At present, tourist buses operate from the city for destinations like Manali, Dharamshala, Jammu and Delhi besides other places from Sector 22.
The unauthorised parking of these buses in front of houses and the Hotel Lane in Sector 22 has been a nuisance for residents and commuters alike.
The survey conducted by the MC had revealed that around 135 tourist buses and 400 school buses are being parked on various unauthorised parking places in the city.
One of the corporation officials said that first and second floors of the building at tourist bus parking will have dormitories for the bus drivers and conductors, while the ground floor will house offices for the travel agents, besides a canteen for passengers. The corporation has decided to spend over Rs 4 crore on the entire project.
Mayor Pardeep Chhabra said during the recent coordination committee meeting he took up the issue with the UT Administration. He said the administration has assured to complete the formalities at the earliest to start the project.
