Chandigarh, January 6 The Mayor has decided to form a committee including area councillors and Municipal Corporation officials to search for open space to provide playgrounds for children in all sectors of the city.

A resolution to this effect was passed by the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation about a month ago, but so far the MC has failed to identify open spaces to be used for the purpose.

As per the proposal, after identifying open spaces within residential areas, the MC has to develop them as playgrounds for children, on the pattern of lawn tennis courts.

The decision was not welcomed by some MC officials who were of the opinion that instead of playgrounds, the MC should focus on providing community parking facility to the residents as due to lack of space, parks located in the residential areas are being used for parking vehicles.

“Instead of playgrounds, community parking lots are needed. As number of vehicles in the city is increasing, in future parking is going to be the main concern for the civic body,” said a senior MC official requesting anonymity.

The official further added that area councillors have developed many greenbelts that are not designated parks as public parks in residential areas. “The need of the hour is to check the designated parks in the city,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mayor Pardeep Chhabra said that providing playgrounds for the children was equally important. Soon, the committee of area councillors and officials will be formed.

He said a detailed survey in all the sectors would be conducted and the numbering of the parks would also be completed.

“After the survey, the misuse of parks will stop as we are planning to hand over the maintenance of big parks to private agencies,” said Chhabra.
