Ludhiana, March 4 The Municipal Corporation Building Branch carried out a demolition drive on Barewal Road. Encroachments done by as many as 12 shops were demolished.

The shopkeepers had done pucca construction in the verandah, which was meant for pedestrians.

The operation was carried out after area MLA Darshan Singh Shivalik gave details of these encroachments in a meeting held on February 28.

According to sources, a few shopkeepers had tried to obstruct the demolition drive by pelting MC staff with stones.

The drive, however, continued as the officials immediately called the area police who brought the situation under control.

Shopkeepers, meanwhile, protested that their shops had been intentionally targeted but certain others had been spared for committing the same crime.

Joint Commissioner Ashok Bajaj and Senior Town Planner Balkar Singh Brar said that they will continue the drive.
