Sources said that during its last meeting the PMC top brass had discussed the matter in detail and had considered proposals to earn extra revenue either by letting more space on rent or by imposing fines on the illegal billboards.
According to MC officials, some days ago, a team of the Corporation officials had visited various sites in the city to stop hoardings from being put up.
Among other places, hoardings and billboards can be seen near the Bus Stand flyover, Fountain Chowk, City Centre, Gurudwara Dukhniwaran Sahib and Leela Bhawan. Even the city police has put up a makeshift hoarding in association with a bank urging general public to help accident victims. The hoarding is at a place not earmarked for the purpose.
Patiala Mayor Ajit Pal Singh Kohli said he had constituted a special wing for under an SDO-level officer and the city would be cleared of all illegal hoardings soon. “Even the advertisement banners put up on private property will have to shell out Rs 250 per square feet otherwise strict action will be taken against them,” he warned.
