MC-Admin coordination panel meets, Mayor seeks transfer of additional powers

Chandigarh, January 8 The coordination committee, comprising officials of the UT Administration and the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh, met today with UT Adviser Pradip Mehra chairing the meeting. Though issues, such as, transfer of more powers and services to the MC were discussed but no concrete decision could be taken.

In today’s meeting issues, such as, construction of a dog pound and a dog burial ground, GPF of employees, transfer of new sectors to the MC from the administration and the master plan for Manimajra were discussed at length.

Since the formation of the coordination committee by UT Administrator Gen S F Rodrigues (retd) to ensure better coordination between the MC and the UT, the committee has held only one meeting. Today’s meeting was attended by Mayor Pardeep Chhabra, Home Secretary Krishna Mohan, Finance Secretary S K Sandhu, Municipal Commissioner R K Rao and Chief Engineers of the UT and the MC. Mehra assured the committee that meetings would be held every month to discuss the pending issues.

Mehra today assured that allotment of land for setting up of a dog burial ground and a dog pound in Chandigarh will be done within a week. He also instructed the officials for an early resolution of the matter regarding the GPF of employees transferred from the UT to the MC.

Mayor Pardeep Chhabra asked for the transfer of functions related to electricity and all new sectors, including removal of wild grass, maintenance of parks and roads, to the MC for their maintenance. On the issue of the master plan for Manimajra, the Adviser said the plan was under process and would be released soon.

The Mayor said that a sanitation drive would be started soon in the colonies and villages and the V-6 roads would be widened during the next ten years.

The Adviser assured the members that sites in sectors 41, 49, 50 and Dhanas would be earmarked for the construction of community centres.

On the issue of gender budgeting, Mehra assured that the recommendations regarding gender budgeting by the MC would be considered. The Adviser also assured that land would be provided for the disposal of carcasses and for a slaughter house.
