New Delhi, February 29 The MCD seems to have woken up to a major problem faced by women in the Capital—the lack of toilets for them in the city. In its budget for the 2008-09 financial year, it has set aside Rs three crore to construct toilets for women around public places in the Capital.

Such has been the “level of neglect” that municipal officials could not provide the exact figure of the number of women’s toilets maintained by them.

While a senior MCD official just said that women’s toilets were “very few” in number, MCD Standing Committee Chairman Vijender Gupta placed the number at 130 out of a total of about 3,200 toilets.

The project is listed on the first-time special project fund escrow account that is under the overall charge of Additional Commissioner (engineering) Naresh Kumar.

Talking to Newsline, Department of Environment Management and Services director-in-chief Anil Prakash said officials surveying various sites across the city to identify possible locations.

The next step, Prakash says, is to select a suitable design for the toilets.

Gupta told Newsline that officials had been instructed to present a report on possible designs and sites by March 31.
