Vadodara It took Baroda Medical College (BMC) twenty years to get recognition for its superspecialty course in plastic surgery. The Medical Council of India (MCI) finally recognised the course after conducting an inspection recently.

The three-year Master of Chirurgical (MCh) course in Plastic Surgery was first started in the BMC in 1988, but it did not meet the MCI criteria. This superspecialty course can be taken up after completing the master degree in surgery.

Various administrative factors including dearth of teaching staff in the department delayed the recognition by twenty years. During the period, the course was provisionally registered and the degree was recognised by Gujarat Medical Council.

“The MCI had already given their nod when the college had initially wanted to start the course. But MCI recognition took time due to various factors. This year, we could meet all MCI criteria in the inspection. This has also ensured that all previous degrees awarded by this course are recognised," said Dr A T Leuva, Dean, BMC.

The MCh course accepts at the most two students every year. Only two colleges in the state offer the course. “As per the MCI guidelines, there should be a 1:1 student-teacher ratio. This year, one student is already pursuing the course and we have one prospective student for the course," said Dr Kinnari Vyas, associate professor and acting head of the department of plastic surgery.
