The final day at “Mukhatib” — the theatre festival organised by Shunya, the Dramatics society of Ramjas College — on Saturday, turned out to be a gritty affair.

Nine plays, ranging from 40 minutes to an hour, cranked out by eight colleges bordered on the media’s role in disinformation, youth rebellion and politicization of campus life. A Hindi adaptation of Italian satirist Dario Fo leant an edge to the productions.

Opening with St Stephen’s Teechers, in which six students enacted their experiences at Whitehall High School and their time with the new drama teacher Mr Nixon, the play involved a gamut of emotions. In the climactic last scene, the teenagers’ despair emerges from beneath their youthful irreverence, giving a morbid edginess to an otherwise comical play.

Maitreyi college’s Kollage 70:30/20:30, a 40-minute satire in Hindi, presented “the other face of India” neglected by the mainstream medi — from the burgeoning size zero fad to the dumbing down of news. “We had been following the news, and noticed how poorly covered major issues were. For reference, we read Udbhavana, a famous Hindi journal, and articles on the recent farmer suicides in Vidarbha by journalist P Sainath,” says Anupriya Sharma of Maitreyi college who participated in the play.
