Mumbai The Bombay Society for Prevention against Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA) has decided to conduct a medical camp for donkeys at platform number 18 of the CST station at 8.30 am on Sunday. According to the SPCA Hospital authorities, about 25-30 donkeys owned by poor construction workers would be administered with free vaccines. A free health check-up and first-aid will also be provided. This is the second of the five camps held every year at different parts of the city, said officials.

“These donkeys work at construction sites and are used to carry building materials like gravel and dust. They are usually used in regions where trucks and tempos can’t reach,” said BSPCA secretary (Retd) Lt Colonel Dr J C Khanna.

An ambulance, a nursing assistant, a dresser and two-three ward boys will be part of the camp that will be led by Dr Yuvraj Kaginkar, hospital manager and veterinarian. “We will give the animals deworming medicines, anti-tetanus vaccination, and dress the injuries,” Kaginkar said.

Diana Singh, executive member of the hospital, said, “We’re trying to educate owners of these donkeys on how to maintain their pets. We have been holding these camps since 2004 after noticing many serious accident cases. We did some research and learnt that in several pockets donkeys are still being used to carry building materials. After five years, we have developed a rapport with some mule owners. We can advise them over a tea.” Khanna said there were over 200 donkeys in the city. There area a huge concentration of donkey population at Khar, Malad, Bandra, Vasai and Borivali, she said.

Singh also said that most ailments in these animals are caused due to injuries that turn into maggot wound, equine tetanus, eye infections, cuts and wounds and hoof problems. The organisation will hold another camp at Vasai, she added.
