After a national meet with the Directorate General of Health at Delhi, all medical colleges have forwarded their proposals. “There are not enough specialists in the state. The Centre feels there is a need not just in Gujarat but in other states as well,” said Dr Vikas Sinha, Dean, Shri M P Shah Medical College, Jamnagar.

The Jamnagar Medical College has proposed a new M D course in Blood Transfusion. “We have the staff and some of them are even awaiting promotions. It is necessary that we have more MDs now,” said Dr Sinha.

While the Surat Medical College has proposed to incorporate 45 more postgraduate seats in the college, the Baroda Medical College wants three new courses.

“We want to have super speciality courses in tuberculosis, forensic medicine and emergency medicine. We have the required teaching staff for the courses. We have also proposed an increase of PG seats by 25 or more,” said Dr A T Leuva, Dean, Baroda Medical College.

The medical colleges had earlier put forward the proposals during the Medical Council of India (MCI) meet in Gujarat last month. The proposals will also be reviewed by the Central government as per MCI guidelines.
