Kanpur A fourth-semester B Pharma student of Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj University (CSMU), Priyanka Shukla (24), committed suicide in her hostel room on Thursday morning.

Shukla, a resident of Collectorganj area of Fatehpur district, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her room number 129 of CSMU Hostel 3. Soon after the university authorities provided the police with the information, the Kalyanpur police reached the campus and broke open the room.

Shukla’s body was then taken for postmortem.

According to a police officer, a suicide note was recovered from the spot. Circle

Officer of Kalyanpur Vipin Kumar Mishra said prima facie it appeared to be a case of suicide. “The alleged suicide was committed between 10 am and 11 am. But the reason behind the extreme step is still unclear.”

Preliminary investigation, which involved the questioning of the friends of the deceased and the university authorities, revealed that Shukla had been under depression for the last few weeks, for which she was also undergoing treatment.

In the suicide note, Shukla claimed that no one was responsible for the extreme step taken by her and the family members and others should not be harassed by the police. Addressing her parents, she wrote that she was frustrated with her life. She also tendered an apology for ending her life.

According to Sweta, roommate of Shukla, she left the hostel at 8.30 am on Thursday to attend her class. Shukla, however, preferred to skip the class and decided to stay in the hostel room. When she returned from the class at 11 am, she found the door locked from inside and from a window saw Shukla hanging from the ceiling fan.

“It was the most horrifying experience of my life, just few hours ago I had spoken to Shukla, and it is impossible to believe that she is no longer with us,” Sweta told the mediapersons.

After receiving the news, Jai Karan Shukla, the father of the deceased came to the university. He was under shock and was not in a condition to make a statement.

Vice-Chancellor of CSMU, Harsh Kumar Saighal told The Indian Express: “The information that we have is that the girl was under depression and was taking treatment from a doctor.”

He admitted that though Shukla was under depression, no one was aware about the cause. Saighal said that a team has been constituted to investigate the matter and soon the reasons behind the suicide would be revealed. The university would also be forming a Counseling Cell.
