Mumbai, January 2 A day after medical teachers went on a hunger strike at the JJ Hospital, the state government discussed their demands in a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday. However, MSMTA, the teachers’ association, rejected the government’s proposal and decided to go ahead with the strike.

MSMTA Secretary Dr N N Ramraje said that the state government has split their demands into factions which was not acceptable to them.

Over 3,000 teachers from across the state went on a relay hunger strike on Tuesday demanding better pay scales, regularization of their posts and payment at par with the medical teachers in Karnataka.

Last year also the teachers had gone on mass casual leave after which they were assured that the matter will be discussed in the winter session of the state Assembly. Failing to hear from the government then, the MSMTA has taken up the issue again and is demanding a firm decision from the government regarding their demands.

“The government should take a serious note of our problems,” said Dr Ramraje. “After discussing the proposal made by the government in our general body meet, we decided to continue the strike,” he added.

“They are conducting operations as per schedule and are also taking lectures. They have not let patients or students suffer. The teachers have been told that the government is taking a positive decision. However, the strike will not be called back unless the state government gives them a written assurance,” said JJ hospital dean Pravin Shingare. “We are hopeful the matter will be resolved by tomorrow.”
