Ludhiana A three-day training course on drip irrigation and artificial ground water recharge concluded at PAU in which participants from Department of Soil and Water Conservation Engineering and Department of Agriculture, Punjab, participated. Dr R.K Mahey, Registrar, PAU who was the chief guest in the concluding function said that drip irrigation system in the Punjab for growing vegetables and for orchards could help in efficient use of water. He emphasised that part of the area from under paddy should be shifted to basmati rice and other kharif crops like maize and groundnut to save the precious water resource. The act passed by Punjab Government to regulate the transplanting of paddy has helped controlling the declining water table in the state, observed Dr Mahey adding that efforts should continue further.

Keeping in view the problem of declining ground water table, Dr. M.P.Kaushal, Head, Department of Soil and Water Engineering highlighted the importance of recharging of groundwater aquifers to arrest the declining water table. He cautioned that if remedial measures were not taken, there was a possibility of reverse flow of ground water from poor quality water areas of south-west Punjab towards good quality areas of central Punjab. In order to recharge ground water aquifers, roof top rain water harvesting as well as recharging the run off from the playgrounds, parks/gardens, lawns, etc. should be undertaken on large scale, suggested Dr Kaushal.

Dr A.K Jain proposed his vote of thanks to the Chief Guest participants. He said that the technicalities of installation and maintenance of drip irrigation system were explained to participants. Drip irrigation system is being supplied to the farmers on 75% subsidy by the Department of Soil and Water Conservation Engineering, Punjab through the horticulture mission, he said.
