The members also formed a 25-member committee which will take up various issues of the union with the government. They also condemned the recent announcement by Punjab government to hike road tax and other charges.
Charan Singh Lohara, spokesperson of All India Motor Transport Congress, said that the government has increased the charges on trucks, on weight basis. As per their announcement, a nine-ton weight category truck will have to pay Rs 5,000 as payment. A 15 ton weight category truck will have to give Rs 8,800 as charges. Lohara stressed that these charges are too high.
Members also pointed out that the DTO office harasses them and challans their vehicles without any reason, only to collect funds. The members demanded that the government must open good driving schools, so that road accidents can be reduced. The meeting was attended by about 700 members.
