Kekoo Gandhi, gallerist
He was one of the greatest painters in India, very modest, humble and quiet. His paintings were some of the finest in Contemporary art. We had the privilege of nurturing him in his early days by buying his paintings even when they were not selling. We made an investment in him and never regretted it. He commands immense respect both among senior and upcoming artists alike.

Baiju Parthan, artist
He was a sensitive person and a wonderful artist. I had met him three years back during a panel discussion on his paintings. He had also come for my solo show in 2006. I never expected someone so senior to make the effort to come. I wanted to go and spend some time with him but that never happened. More than an artist, I miss him as a person.

Rajendra Kapse, artist
It's difficult to express what I feel now. I only met him once at a ceremony at Le Meridian hotel. He was a great artist because his work was original. He never compromised on his style. I admire him for that. He was not only an amazing painter but also an exceptional human being.

Tasneem Mehta, collector
The art world has lost a very important personality. His way of expression was unique and never tried before in India. He used a goddess like Kali to represent issues that he was concerned with. He grounded his paintings in the Indian ethos and yet used them to comment on the contemporary situation. Very few contemporary artists can reach the high standards that he set.

Chintan Upadhyay, artist
I didn't know him personally but I knew his daughter very well and through her I got to know him too. He was quite a genius as an artist. He might be the most important artist of modern times. His death is a big loss for India and for the art scene.
