Allahabad, January 3 Two inmates of the high-security Naini Central Jail here died today while two others were admitted to a hospital following what is suspected to be an outbreak of Meningitis.

Four prisoners had been hospitalised late last night following sudden deterioration in their health, official sources said adding that among them two undertrials — one being a murder accused and another booked in connection with a theft in a train — died in the afternoon.

The relatives of one of the undertrials, who came to the hospital after being informed about his death, also alleged that they had seen “injury marks”on the prisoners’ body, a charge denied by the hospital authorities.

Meanwhile, authorities at the jail as well as the hospital were tight-lipped about the cause of the deaths though unconfirmed reports said that the prisoners — including both the deceased and the remaining two — have been diagnosed with Meningitis.
