Mentally challenged youth jumps off SSG Hospital roof, dies

Ahmedabad A mentally challenged youth, who was brought to the District Leprosy Office at the Sir Sayajirao General (SSG) Hospital, jumped off the terrace of a two-storeyed building and died on Tuesday.

The incident occurred around 3.30 pm. Before jumping off the roof, the unidentified youth had created a chaos at the leprosy centre office. To control him, the hospital authorities and security officials had to struggle hard, according to the eyewitnesses.

According to the hospital authorities, in the afternoon, the youth entered the leprosy office and started throwing furniture there. This created a panic among the people present there, who subsequently closed the doors in order to avoid any mishap.

“We do not know how he entered the ward. We came out on hearing the commotion down stairs,” said Deepti Rana, senior nurse at the Casualty Ward.

The person then rushed upstairs and started throwing articles lying there. While the hospital workers and ward boys tried to bring him down, he started throwing down abandoned articles from the terrace. In the meantime, police were informed, but panicked by the commotion around him, the youth jumped off the terrace and lost consciousness fainted.

"Although no major injury was visible, he was rushed to the emergency ward," said Rana. He was kept under sedative and was attended to by psychologists before he died at 7 pm.

"We do not know where he came from neither was he in a condition to tell his identity. The body has been sent for postmortem," said Pritesh Shah, Chief Medical Officer, SSG Hospital.
