This is a winter phenomenon that the city and Central Gujarat has not witnessed in decades. It has left the farmers as the chill could affect the mango flowering that follows in summer. The doctors of the city, meanwhile, remained busy as the Barodians have been caught by unexpected infections and cold.
The annual Tibetan woollen market has also run out of its winter stocks as the demand for the woollens has suddenly shot up this year due to the uncharacteristic and prolonged winter chill.
Doctors have already warned Barodians of winter infection due to the unexpected cold and have been advising them to keep warm. Some old timers like Aftab Khan (65) in the city mention that this year the cold has been uncharacteristic and the city has never experienced prolonged winters with mercury dipping to such an extent.
Anand Agriculture University vice-chancellor MC Varshneya, meanwhile, said that the winter chill was good for crops like wheat, gram and mustard, but could spell doom for leafy crops as they will be adversely affected due to winter frost. He also added that the unprecedented cold could spell doom for those farmers who are experimenting with grapes.
He said the mango trees were also expected to witness multiple flush after the temperature rise, leading to
irregular shape of the fruits, which,will ultimately affect the market.
