New Delhi The Union Cabinet approved the Delhi Metro Railways (Amendment) Bill, 2009, late on Wednesday, and this will enable the government to amend the Delhi Metro (Operation & Maintenance) Act, 2002 and the Metro Railways (Construction of Works) Act, 1978.

This bill is expected to provide a proper legal framework for the construction of extensions to Gurgaon and Noida. With this, work can’t be stalled or legally challenged.

As these extensions are to be completed before the Commonwealth Games 2010, the need for an appropriate legal cover has often been felt by the government, a government press release stated.

As all Metro projects involve huge capital investment, any delay in execution of these projects can lead to huge time and cost overruns and ultimately loss to the state or national Exchequer, the release stated.

The Act will help the Delhi Metro extend its service to the National Capital Region. It will also empower the Metro Railway administration to provide for other transport services for facilitating passengers or to provide integrated transport services, and to place the commissioners of metro railway safety under the administrative control of the chief commissioner of railway safety.
