The incident occurred on February 6, when Metro Customer Facilitation Agent Satyendra Jaiswal got his hand stuck in the door of train no 202 running between Central Secretariat and Jehangirpuri and was dragged for 1 km between the stations. “The door reopened three times for the entry and exit of passengers as there was a massive crowd, thus blocking door closure,” said Anuj Dayal, spokesperson of the DMRC.
“Metro doors are programmed to reopen three times whenever an obstruction of over 15 mm blocks their way. After three attempts, the door can only be closed by pushing the door physically. In this case, after the third time the door tried to close unsuccessfully, it would have remained open and the train would not have started. Unfortunately someone from the crowd physically pushed the door, thus manually forcing the door to close on the wrist of the CFA,” the enquiry report stated.
The committee also did not find any error on the part of the train operator in the incident. The train, which normally stops for 25 seconds at Rajiv Chowk, halted for 1 minute 28 seconds on the day.
As the first step to avoid any such incident in the future, all Customer Facilitation Agents would be re-trained. “They should block passenger entry and exit the moment train doors start closing but should keep a safe distance from the doors. All passengers are also advised not to obstruct doors that are closing,” said Dayal. The committee has recommended posting a person at crowded stations to raise a manual alarm in case of emergency. The DMRC will also start a awareness campaign on such hazards.
