In contrast to the old set up of magnetic stripe tickets and smartcards, the new system will comprise multiple and single journey tickets with RFID (radio-frequency identification) smartcards and tokens. Also, the 132 automatic gates currently installed at the stations will be replaced by 280 retractable flap barrier gates.
A research and development (R&D) centre is likely to be established for integrating the new hardware components, such as automatic gates, with the software programme that CRIS will prepare for the system. The software programmes will control all exit and entry operations, audible alarms as well as information panels on the automatic gates.
“If everything goes according to plan, the new system will come into force by July or August,” said Tapas Mukherjee, general secretary, Metro Railway Workers’ Committee and Zonal Secretary of NFIR.
Ticketing is not the only problem the Metro Railways is faced with. After yesterday’s incident of a train derailing while shunting, fingers are being raised on the maintenance of metro rail tracks. On this, Chief Public Relations Officer Rabi Mahapatra said it was a one-off incident. “Trains started after 6:30 pm on a paper clearance system and services were not normal for a while. There are, however, no problems with the tracks,” said Mahapatra, adding: “The cause for derailing incident will be clear only when the inquiry report is submitted.”
