“The remaining 11 coaches will arrive by September as a Durga puja gift for Kolkatans,” the official said.

Another 14 AC rakes will arrive by next year Durga Puja with the phasing out of the old rakes that are in operation since 1984, the official added.

Meanwhile, seven rakes that are in operation since the early 90s will be converted to AC coaches. They will be attached with advanced fault detection gadgets, air-springs and spacious vestibules, and new swing doors of international quality, he said.

While the frequency of trains will be increased, the Metro will also replace its current “absolute block system” with automated signalling on its 23-km route. The new signalling system will enable the trains to start from two stations simultaneously.
