Mumbai Rubina and Azhar, whom the world watched while Slumdog Millionaire sweeped the Oscars, have more good news in store when they return. The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) is all set to gift a flat each to Rubina, the young Latika in the film, and Azhar who plays the young Salim.

The MHADA on Tuesday approved a proposal to allot free flats for them. This follows a letter from MHADA’s Mumbai Board Chairman Amarjeet Singh Manhas to MHADA vice-president Gautam Chatterjee.

“They brought fame to the country, but live in rundown hutments in Bandra’s Garibnagar. Hence we decided that MHADA should gift them the flats,” said Manhas.

Manhas has requested that a flat be allotted to each under the two percent discretionary quota of the Chief Minister. He explained that even though the two children qualified for the artistes quota, a flat cannot be allotted directly as it requires a draw of lots.

The flats will be handed over to the children, if the chief minister agrees to the request.
