Chandigarh With an aim to expand the benefits of the mid-day meal scheme, the Education department has decided to include madrasas, as well as a school for the physically and mentally challenged in the scheme.

The plan has already been tabled before the Administration.

While all the government schools in the UT are covered under the mid-day meal scheme, this is for the first time that madrasas are being included.

“The proposal has been made keeping in mind the significance of providing all the facilities to these students. Mid-day meals are an integral part of schools and the same should be extended to a larger sphere of students. It is also a way to make them feel that they are as much a part of the department as other students,” said Director Public Insturctions (Schools) Samwartak Singh.

Officials said the department has formed committees to look into the working of the proposal and if things go well, the plan will be brought into force in the coming month.

“We want to provide the best services to these students. Factors like hygiene, freshness and nutrition value of meals will be taken care of. Committees comprising diet experts and food inspectors will make regular visits to ensure that high quality food is served to students,” said Singh.
