Milk collection units for 1,500 societies

Chandigarh The Haryana Dairy Development Cooperative Federation is planning to provide automatic milk collection units to 1,500 village-level societies in the next three years and to give bulk milk coolers to the societies of milk producers who cater to a cluster of 10 to 15 villages.

Managing Director of the Federation, Dhanpat Singh, said at present, 610 societies have automatic milk collection units where the weight and fat is measured instantly in a transparent manner. It is also checked for any adulteration, with the milk testing kits, certified by the National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal.

He said that milk procurement in Haryana touched an all-time high of over 9.45 lakh litres per day on December 29, against a previous high of 8.61 lakh litres per day.

A total of 363 Vita milk booths are functioning in different cities of Haryana, and nine in Chandigarh. There are around 260 distributors selling Vita milk and milk products.

The number of milk farmers had increased from 1.04 lakh in 2004-05 to more than 1.38 lakh in December 2008. The turn over of the Federation had increased from Rs 355 crore in 2004-05 to Rs 550 crore up to December 2008 and its profit has increased from Rs 84 lakh to Rs 5.23 crore during the same period.

The average price paid to the producers of milk is Rs 17.55 per litre as against Rs 11.76 per litre in 2004-05.
