Chandigarh A book titled ‘United Nations and Empowerment of Women’ was released by Panjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof R C Sobti on Tuesday. The book has been authored by Dr Surinder K Shukla, a professor in the Department of Correspondence Studies, PU.

Prof Sobti appreciated the efforts of the author for highlighting the complexities that occur in society.

Talking about the book, Prof Shukla said: “The focus of the book is how even in developed as well as developing countries, women suffer and what effect social disintegration, unemployment, environmental degradation and war have on them. In many countries, there is a vast gap between rights of women that exists on paper and their actual experience.”

The book also talks about efforts of the United Nations campaign to promote and protect the equal rights of women. The book states that millions of women, especially in developing countries and newly independent states, have begun moving towards self-realisation and self-sufficiency, added Shukla.

She went on to add that the book, however, should not seem to be an attempt to overlook the presence of men in the society. The book seeks to address both the theoretical significance of gender as realised by the United Nations and practical importance for all concerned with the formulation and administration of social policy.

There are many books written separately on the United Nations and issues relating to women but none dealing with United Nations and women together.

This book aims to fill this gap, she said.
