There's a flurry of activity, one that’s hard to comprehend, for all that you see is a skeletal structure of bamboo, one that promises to be grand and evocative. Glen, faculty member at the University of Washington Seattle and his students of architecture, with the Chandigarh College of Architecture, through IP2009, are studying the development of Chandigarh, its conceptual ideas, the emerging ones and how development in the city will sustain the character of the city. “Corbusier is the father of modern architecture and we are recalling Nehru’s invocation of Chandigarh...a city unfettered by the past through DesignBuild, an architectural structure or expression in bamboo, which was conceptualized by a student of the Chandigarh College of Architecture, Aman,’’ explains Glen, who has studied Corbusier’s work deeply and is fascinated by the architect’s concepts of space, light, flexibility. The structure is being put up at the Plaza on a temporary basis and the idea, says Glen, is to initiate a dialogue on what Chandigarh is, where it’s going and the choice of material, bamboo was simply because it’s so Indian, flexible, affordable, does great in both tension and compression. “It’s a creative exercise and its conception is to provoke thoughts, whether the city’s heart centre, Sector 17 has been displaced, its homogenous form diminished et al,’’ Glen is struck by the energy of the city and how fast it’s changing. Watch the action live at the Plaza till February 16.
