Pune In a move that could undermine the city traffic police's effort to make city roads less congested for city commuters, inter-city luxury buses are all set to make an entrance into the city. However, the reprieve, coming at the behest of Satish Patil, State Minister for Transport, may last only 15 days.

"This is a temporary arrangement. They came to me with their petitions and I have requested the DCP traffic to give them some time, till the Pune Municipal Corporation makes alternative arrangements for these bus operators," said Patil, speaking to The Indian Express.

However, he added that this was a 'traffic' problem and not a 'transport' problem. "I have not made any promises. They will be able to enter the city for the next fortnight only before 7 am and after 8 pm; not during the day," Patil said.

DCP Traffic Manoj Patil did not comment on the Minister's statement. "We will ensure that the people of the city are not inconvenienced and the roads are not congested," he said.

Prasanna Patwardhan, owner of Prasanna Travels and vice president of the Maharashtra State Luxury Bus Owners Association, said that the luxury bus owners would be accessing four city roads starting Friday.

"We are planning to operate from four places tomorrow where we have private parking spaces -- J M Road, behind Ambedkar Bhavan, opposite Hotel Le Meridian, and from Shaniwarwada," Patwardhan said. "As the traffic police has not issued any GR on not allowing private buses into the city, it has no legal standing. We need some space within the city — not necessarily in the heart — to pick and drop passengers," he said.
