According to police, Bharat Patel, a junior clerk at the Surat Nagrik Sahkari Bank, along with other bank officials collected Rs 1.50 crore
from IDBI Bank branch on Ghod Dod Road and Rs 2.20 crore from the State Bank of India Chowk Bazaar branch and returned to their bank at Varachha near Geetanjali theatre, in a Tata Sumo (GJ-5CD-5096).
The cash was packed in four bags. After reaching the bank, gunman Omprakash stood guard outside the car while others went to deliver Rs 1.90 crore to the branch manager.
Patel said he took 20 minutes to return and from there they went to the Salabatpura branch near Jash Market.
After reaching the market, Patel found that of the three bags, one was missing.
Patel immediately contacted the bank manager at Varachha branch. Later, a complaint of theft was registered with the Varachha police station on Tuesday night.
Inspector V B Patel said: “Patel was accompanied by car driver Naresh Jikad, peon Amul Choudhry, gunman Omprakash and two other bank officials. Omprakash was the only one person who was guarding the car when Patel and others went to deliver cash. We are interrogating all of them and we suspect that somebody within team might be involved in the theft. The car was hired by the bank officials from a private party.”
