After AND, an established pręt label that’s over a decade old, Dongre has yet again succumbed to the bait of ready-to-wear with her latest collection—Anita Dongre Iinter pręt—an interpretation of the world of fashion. “Ten years ago, everybody was only focusing on designer wear, but today more designers are looking at pręt wear, because it is more popular,” she explains.
Targeting the woman who wants a bit more, Dongre has split her signature label to accommodate the upper middle class. “Today’s women prefer an exclusive look for special occasions,” says the lady who already has three lines—AND, MO and Anita Dongre Indian Soul. With pricing at an affordable Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000, Anita Dongre Iinter pręt will be for those who don’t mind spending that extra buck.
Dongre’s mantra is clearly mass appeal. “It’s very gratifying when a woman walking on the streets walks up to me and says that she loves my designs,” says the 44-year-old, who also does uniforms for the Taj hotels.
“Unlike AND, where clothes are trendy yet simple, Iinter pręt will be for those who need wardrobe versatility in their everyday semi formal-to-formal clothing. Here, I have paid more attention to cuts and fabrics,” says Dongre, of her line that has four collections—Earthy Hues, Sunshine, Indian Karma and Classic Linens. “I have kept each of my clients in mind while designing these; I exactly know who will be opting for which piece,” she adds. But her favourite from the lot is the Earthy Hues collection. “Feminine, pure and fancy free—each garment is a piece of fine work. Woven, lightweight mul in its natural colour makes a subtle statement and is perfect for the coming summer.”
Since the film industry has beckoned every designer worth her sewing machine, Dongre’s jumped on the wagon too. “I’ve just completed a film, Sorry Bhai, for Onir, where I styled all the characters,” she says.
“I haven’t taken up many more projects because I just finished working for it.”
