Kolkata A student from Mizoram drowned in a pond at Jadvapur University on early Tuesday morning. Jorangthara (22) was in the city to meet his friend Pujan Narjinari — a student of electrical engineering at JU who stayed at the university’s main hostel.

According to the eyewitnesses, Jorangthara was standing alongwith Narjinari by the side of the pond when he slipped and fell into the water. The students raised alarm and tried unsuccessfully to trace him. After the police were informed, divers fished out his body. The pond, which is located in the main campus, is deep and there have been instances when people have drowned in the pond. A case of unnatural death has been lodged at Jadavpur Police station. The incident has raised question about the security at the hostel as Jorangthara had put up at the hostel on Monday night without seeking permission. “ We have a rule that anyone staying overnight will have to take permission from hostel superintendent. In this case, the hostel superintendent was completely unaware about the youth’s presence in the hostel,” said Pradip Kumar Ghosh, Registrar, JU.

Youth suicide: 3 mall officials held

Three persons were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the alleged suicide of a youth, whose body was recovered near a railway track at Akra in the southern outskirts of the city on Monday, the police said. According to a senior officer of the Shakespeare police station, Robin Jain — a salesman working in a shopping mall on Camac Street — was caught stealing Rs 100. He was then allegedly asked to write on a paper that he was a thief and he would resign. He was humiliated by his seniors in front of the staff members of the mall, following which he committed suicide, added the officer.

Body of 21-year-old Jain was found near the rail track at Akra. “We have arrested three senior employees of the mall, who had humiliated him, on charges of abatement to suicide. They were later produced in the Bankshal court and remanded to seven days’ police custody,” said a senior officer. Allegedly Jain had come to know about some unlawful practices of the trio and so he was forced to write down such a letter, so that he could not divulge their corrupt practices before the mall authorities, said the officer.
