Allahabad The Allahabad High Court granted bail on Wednesday to MP Afzal Ansari in connection with the murder case of BJP legislator Krishnanand Rai.

Rai, a legislator from Mohammadabad constituency in Ghazipur district, along with his seven supporters, were shot dead in broad daylight in Ghazipur on November 29, 2005.

Following the incident, his brother R N Rai had filed an FIR at the Bhawarkol police station against Mukhtar Ansari, his brother Afzal Ansari, Munna Bajrangi and several others. Justice Poonam Srivastava granted bail to Afzal on conditions that he will not tamper with the evidence, will cooperate during the trial, and appear before the court on each date fixed by the court. Afzal’s counsel BP Srivastava said he sought the bail of his client on grounds that the Supreme Court on August 1, 2008, had ordered an interim stay on the trial proceeding in sessions court until further order.

According to Srivastava, Afzal was charged with only Section 120 (B) IPC and had been in the jail for three years now when all the witnesses in the case had turned hostile. Afzal was also among the Samajwadi Party MPs, who had defied the party whip in the trust vote in July 2008 and was expelled from the party.
