Mumbai The Dahisar police on Monday arrested Praveen Darekar, a Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader, for trespassing on a private property in Dahisar and assaulting a senior citizen in December 2007. However, Darekar was released on bail.

According to the police, Darekar along with his men had allegedly assaulted the complainant Mahadeo Nikam (68) and his wife on December 12, 2007, after Nikam’s son Prakash was booked in a rape case. Mahadeo’s son Prakash was accused of raping his minor daughter and a complaint was lodged by Prakash’s wife in the police station, the police said.

After receiving Prakash’s wife’s complaint, two constables had gone to Madadeo’s residence to enquire Prakash’s whereabouts. But, Mahadeo told them that Prakash had left home early in the morning. Later, a mob allegedly comprising MNS workers dragged Mahadeo out of his residence at Santosh Nivas in Dahisar in presence of the police. The mob had assaulted him, blackened his face and vandalised his house. Subsequently, Mahadeo had filed a complaint against those who had assaulted him. But, since the police did not take any action, Nikam had approached the high court for seeking Darekar’s arrest.

The high court had recently passed an order directing the Dahisar police to arrest Darekar. “Darekar was arrested on charges of trespass and assault. He was later released on bail,” said a police official attached to the Dahisar police station.
