Mumbai The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’s (MNS) rally at the Thane Central Ground, slated for January 24, was yet to get Thane police’s nod till late last evening. MNS chief Raj Thackeray is expected to address the rally.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police, Vikram Deshmane, the police are yet to issue permission to MNS for holding the public rally. According to sources, the police are intentionally delaying permission and would eventually grant conditional permission by extracting assurances from MNS leaders that there would not be any inflammatory speeches directed against any person or community. For the MNS, the public rally at Thane is a big event as Thackeray would be addressing the public rally after being barred by the Mumbai police from making speeches in September 2008. Earlier Raj had made a couple of appearances in Thane.

He had also drawn cartoons of his uncle and mentor Bal Thackeray and Gopinath Munde. Thackeray had also made references to the celebration of Uttar Pradesh Divas in Maharashtra.

Meanwhile the police are evaluating the reply given by Thane MNS leader to section 144 notice of the CrPC.

According to MNS leaders, the reply to the police stated that their leader Raj was a political leader and this being a democratic country he had all the rights to conduct his political campaign. According to MNS leader Hari Mali, the eagerly awaited public rally would be attracting a crowd of over a lakh.
