Bathinda, February 24 It seems residents of Goniana Mandi wanted to repeat yesterday's Hajipur case, where a mob mercilessly beat up a murder accused.

Tension gripped the area today when a large number of people staged a protest and raised anti-police slogans following a case of alleged rape of a six-year-old girl by a 58-year-old man. The accused, Narinder Sharma, police said, worked as a senior assistant with Markfed.

The agitators were demanding handing over of Narinder Sharma to them to "blacken his face and to beat him up for his act". "This is ridiculous on part of the people, as we had registered a case yesterday and later also arrested the accused. How can we hand him over to them?" Nahianwala SHO Buta Singh said.

According to the SHO, the victim had gone to the house of accused to play with a child, who was not present. Buta Singh said as per the complaint made to police, Narinder Sharma raped the child, who was later medically-examined. The report was awaited, he added.

Meanwhile, it was learnt that people vandalised the house of the accused. The family of Narinder had already left the place.

In another case of gang-rape of a 17-year-old girl was registered at Kotwali police station yesterday night. "Her family had approached the police on February 17 saying that the girl had been missing since February 14. A case was registered, but yesterday she came to the police station and claimed that two girls from Ferozepur, Reena and Geeta, who were her acquaintance, took her to Ferozepur. Then, she alleged, they presented her to different persons, who raped her, Kotwali SHO Davinder Singh said. "We are verifying the charges,” he added.
