Kolkata Angry mob engaged in a scuffle with the police on Sunday night after an accident that left seven persons injured on the DC Dey Road in Tangra.

At 10.45 pm, a lorry collided with an autorickshaw en route from Sealdah to Palmer Bazaar. There were seven people in the autorickshaw.

Of them, three had been admitted to the NRS hospital in a critical condition, while four were discharged after treatment early on Monday.

Sujit Biswas, Kamala Biswas and Shiek Sanawar are still in the hospital with serious injuries. Soon after the incident, a mob of around 200 people attacked policemen, set a police motorcycle on fire along with a private motorcycle that was parked in the area.

There were reports of brick batting also by the mob. The area remained tense well past midnight.

The rest of the victims were members of a family— a grandfather, couple and their child.

Mobs attacked policemen and didn’t even spare the Entally police team that rushed to the spot to control the crowd. A police bike was set on fire. A few people even cornered policemen and thrashed them.

There senior officers rushed to the spot with reinforcements and the mob retreated after police resorted to tear gas shells and lathicharge.

Seven persons were arrested for rioting and were produced in court on Monday and have been remanded to police custody till February 27.

The incident was a shocking reminder of the mob rampage at Charu Market police station on October 4 last year.

Five policemen had been injured in the violence after a bus overturned, injuring 14 passengers. Tension rippled through the area when people got to know that the injured driver, Sanawar Shiek was from the locality.
