A case in this regard has been registered with Raopura police station against one Bankim Soni, who was jailed two months ago for failing to pay alimony after divorce.
"There were five mobile phones with him and one of them had a SIM card in it. It was during a routine check by the jail authorities that they heard Soni talking on the phone. We have started an inquiry into the matter and are trying to find out how the cell phone found its way inside the jail," said investigating officer A B Nagori at the Raopura police station. Soni is lodged in yard-6 six of barrack-4. Vadodara Central Jail officials, however, refused to speak on the issue.
Raopura police said more information is expected to come out during the investigation.
“It is too early to comment on how the phone reached the inmate, but we suspect it was either someone from his family or a friend who did it. The fact remains that such incidents are not new to us, as we regularly get such information; and whenever we get specific information, we register the offence," said an officer at the station.
