The letter in her hands is still crisp. But it's the look on her face that tells you it brings good news. "I made it to the final line-up," gushes the leggy lady dressed in a cutesy denim mini and a halter top to match. Deepika Sanjta has all reason to be excited. "I am one of the finalists at this year's Gladrags Mega Model Contest to be held in April in Mumbai," Deepika reels out the good news as she passes us the congratulatory letter from the grand lady of grooming and model hunts Maureen Wadia. The news arrived this Tuesday, plum on Deepika's 24th birthday. "I have been waiting for this forever. Since I was a child, I had my heart set out on becoming a model," chuckles Sanjta, who hails from Shimla but completed her studies and shifted base to Chandigarh to "pursue my dreams."

A protege of city-based "grooming guru" and fashion choreographer Jeet Brar, Sanjta has previously walked the ramp for INIFD shows across the country and rubbed shoulders with former beauty queens and supermodels. "I have been selective about the kind of work I do," says Deepika who towers above the rest at a model-friendly 5 feet 9 inches. To this her "mentor" and "guide" Brar adds, "The city has its share of models who are pretty active on the local fashion circuit but Deepika was keen to aim higher. So we got down to serious work." So in came two-hour sessions at the gym, along with a strict diet regime and yes, with ample beauty therapies thrown in. "Gladrags is today a prestigious model hunt as it takes you to bigger things and is a perfect launch pad to Bollywood. There are so many examples - Lara Dutta, Koena Mitra, Dino Morea, John Abraham," lists out Deepika who also signed up for the contest as it "rates you on just on your looks and model features unlike other beauty paegents where they lay emphasis on communication skills and IQ!

"And Maureen Wadia is the perfect grooming expert. I am really looking forward to her makeover for me," smiles the shy Deepika who has been busy shopping the last few days for her designer bikinis (a must for the contest) and a red gown. "We have got the gown sponsored by Delhi-based designer Abdul Halder," chips in Brar. As far as emotional support goes, Deepika has her parents to fall back on. "My father is a retired Colonel while my mother is a homemaker. I am the youngest in the family and extremely lucky to have their support," signs off the model, who flies off to Mumbai this Friday for a month of grooming sessions. We wish her luck.
